Dr. John Nikolovski Discusses the different parts of Orthodontic Braces!

There are different parts of orthodontic appliances that help in treating your case to get a normal bite.  The list below can help to answer your questions below on how we get your smile nice and straight!

1) Orthodontic bracket:  An orthodontic bracket is the main part of braces that help your teeth become straight.  There are different types of orthodontic brackets including metal, clear ceramic braces and even self ligating braces.  These brackets are glued to your teeth and then removed when your braces are finished.  Also, we tie your colored elastics around these braces when you have your monthly orthodontic adjustments.

2) Orthodontic Spring: Springs are placed on the archwire and they can help push your teeth around to get a proper bite.

3) Orthodontic Hooks:  Orthodontic hooks are a part of certain orthodontic brackets and they aid in allowing you to hook elastics on to help slide teeth past one another.

4) Orthodontic Archwire: This is the wire that moves your teeth.  By changing different wire sizes and wire grades we can shift and slide your teeth past one another to align them into that perfect straight smile everyone desires.

5) Orthodontic Bands: These are placed on your last teeth to help act as a strong anchor of your braces.  By placing a strong band at the back, there is usually less breakage of appliances

Tips To Avoid Problems When Wearing Braces!

Although you may take extreme care of your braces, they can cause soreness to your mouth.  During the first month after placing your braces it is normal for your teeth to ache and for your jaw to be a little bit sore for the first few days.

Other common issues may be broken brackets, loose wires and bands which may cause temporary soreness around your lips and gums.  The following guide can help determining what is wrong and what you can do at home to help.

1) Loose Orthodontic bracket.  A loose orthodontic bracket occurs when a metal brace is broken and slides from side to side on the wire.   Apply a small amount of orthodontic wax to the bracket temporarily. This will help with any discomfort temporarily until you can come to your next appointment

2) Loose Bands: A loose band will stay in place until your next appointment although it will be a bit wiggly if you put force on it.  If brought to your Orthodontists attention they can fix it at your next appointment

3)  Poking wires: You can sometimes use the end of the eraser of a pencil to help put the wire into a more comfortable place, or if you are unable to move it you can apply some wax until your next appointment

Foods to Avoid

Some foods can also help or hurt you while you’re wearing braces. Remember to cut your food into small pieces that can be easily chewed. Some foods such as apples, pizza crust, hard candy bubble gum ice cubes should be avoided.

And always remember to brush and floss thoroughly when you are cleaning your appliances!

Dr. John Nikolovski your Brooklin Orthodontist Discusses Different types of bite problems

Your dental bite - or the way your teeth meet together can affect a number of different things, including speech, breathing or even the way your look.   Dental Malocclusions can also cause your teeth to wear down, chip or crowd over time.

There are a few main types of bite patterns including a crossbite, underbite or overbite.  Dr. John Nikolovski your Whitby Invisalign Orthodontist explains the difference between the three types of bites.

Crossbites

There are a few different crossbites  that are classified in different groups. First a posterior crossbite is a crossbite that occurs when the upper jaw is too narrow for the lower jaw.  The teeth on one or both sides are too narrow to fit with the lower teeth properly and this condition can cause wear of the teeth.
A second type of crossbite is when one or more on the top are stuck in behind of the bottom teeth.  This is called a localized anterior (front) crossbite

Underbites

An underbite occurs when the lower teeth are too far forward from the top teeth and these conditions can be caused by jaw growth anomalies.   Treatment for this type of problem can range from an straight forward 2 year comprehensive orthodontic treatment or a more complex treatment involving corrective jaw surgery.

Overbites (Overjet)

An overbite on the other had occurs when your lower jaw is too small for your upper in the front to back dimension of space.  A more correct dental term for this problem is called overjet.  Fortunately this problem can be treated with braces and functional appliances or surgery if the problem is very severe.

Brooklin Ontario Orthodontist discusses retainer wear!
Dr. John Nikolovski, your Whitby Ontario Orthodontist explains that when the  time for removing your braces arrives it can be both an exciting and confusing time as you are faced to choose between a fixed or removable retainer.   Knowing about each type of your retainer can help with some of the confusion.
Permanent Retainers
A permanent retainer is a small wire placed in behind your teeth for life.  Having a permanent retainer glued in can help reduce the chance of relapse, as the patient does not need to worry about wearing their retainer night time.

A permanent retainer can hold your teeth for a longer period of time  as teeth can shift naturally as we age.  One negative aspect to fixed retainers is home care and hygiene. Some patients find it more difficult to floss around a fixed retainer, but Dr. John Nikolovski, your Whitby Orthodontist can show you effective ways to floss fairly quickly with your permanent retainer.
Removable Retainers
Removable retainers on the other hand can be placed in at bedtime and removed in the morning when you begin your day.  Its great at holding your final result if it is worn properly.  Your Ajax Orthodontist Dr. Nikolovski warns however that a removable retainer can be forgotten at times, which can lead to relapse over a long period of time.
Brushing and flossing is much easier with a removable retainer as the retainer can be easily removed.  Removable retainers effective as long as they are used as they are directed.
One of the most important things to remember is that wearing your retianer as instructed is the most important thing after your braces are removed.

Brooklin Orthodontist Dr. John Nikolovski Talks about Elastics!

July 16th, 2012

Orthodontic elastics are always a very important part of your orthodontic treatment if Brooklin Invisalign dentist Dr. Nikolovski recommends them during your orthodontic care.  As with anything else when wearing braces in Whitby, Ontario it is very important that you follow elastic wear instructions during treatment.

Elastics during your orthodontic treatment in Ajax Ontario can help to align your bite or can help push your teeth around to line up properly. Specific instructions will be given during your orthodontic care on how to place elastics and in what direction Dr. John Nikolovski will want your elastics placed.
Proper elastic wear can make orthodontic treatment in Whitby, Ontario shorter if worn properly and for the right amount of time.
ALways remember the following rules with elastic wear.  First you won’t be able to open your mouth fully, so your elastics can be removed during meal time.  Other times, your Brooklin Orthodontist Dr. John Nikolovski may recommend your elastics to only be worn at night time when a small shifting is needed to correct your bite.  Always be careful with your rubber bands as they can snap if you open your mouth too wide!!
If elastics are not worn when asked, it can prolong treatment time and it may make it more difficult to get a good bite, so always do your best to wear them, to allow you to obtain that beautiful new smile.
