Many have asked us about thumbsucking...is it a problem?
At Durham Orthodontics concerned parents ask us about thumbsucking.  Your Whitby Orthodontist Dr. John Nikolovski explains that under some circumstances many children can suck their thumb up to the ages of 4 years old and not cause any damage to the oral cavity.
However if thumb-sucking continues to occur past the eruption of the permanent teeth, an anterior open bite can occur which may require early phase I orthodontic intervention, and cause problems with proper growth and development of the jaws.
If you are a worried parent, please schedule a complementary consultation at Durham Orthodontics and we can discuss treatment and early options for intervention.
